At times you may have faced situation to wait so that the unwanted object or person distances itself from the background before you take a pick. While Google already announced such feature earlier this year by the name of Magic Eraser, Apple too now has introduced a similar feature that would allow users to remove the object from the background and applying suitable replacement over the removed object.

The company has added the features in its latest developer betas for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS 15.1.

The feature is called “Clean Up” and help users to identify the unwanted object with just a tap. The algorithm has two AI features in it. The first is to removed the identified object with a tap through a circle drawn over it by the user. And the second is to apply a suitable background over it.

The company says that it can identify shadows and reflections and can remove them if they are caused by the undesired object in the image before applying an appropriate background.

This is certainly not the first time that Apple has introduced an AI feature for its users. In the IOS 17 version, the AI allowed identification of the pets in order to organize them better.

Then there is also the PhotoAI app which helps to unblur the images, and to also increase their resolution without loss of quality along with more features like cartoonize yourself.

First Glance Comparison between Google’s Magic Eraser and Apple’s AI Cleanup Tool

It is important to note that Apple’s Cleanup has been launched in Beta mode and there is likelihood for further refinements. Initial comparisons suggests that Google’s Magic Eraser is not really sharp in identifying shadows and reflections as observed from the below comparison video.
