It would be an understatement to say that Generative AI has made it extremely easy for students to not only get information but to also write academic assignments and thesis. The human-like written answers incorporated with facts, figures can make the answers appeal extremely informative and relevant.

While it may be ok to use Gen AI to obtain relevant information but if you are a student thinking of using Gen AI to substitute hard work involved in writing, you may need to think twice.

A news published in BBC highlights a story about a University Student who almost came to an expulsion on being caught using the Gen AI tool for writing the answers.

The story indicates that the student in question belongs to United Kingdom and her teacher suspected her answers to be written by AI after scanning her essays with a AI generated text detection.

The student used another name Hannah to tell her story to the BBC where she admitted that suffering from Covid and tight deadlines compelled her to use AI to write her essays.

The student was given zero marks for her answers written with the help of AI before receiving an email from the tutor about an academic misconduct and possible expulsion.

However, she was let off by the University Panel as there was no clear evidence about how much AI generated content was used by the student to complete her assignement despite admitting that she indeed used an AI tool. The University possibly took a lenient approach and let off Hannah with a strict warning.

The story highlights why students should refrain from using AI tools especially if their colleges or Universities have strict regulations and code of ethics regarding the use of AI tools in their academics.

How Efficient are AI Text Detection Tools and Platforms?

There are multiple detection platforms on the Internet that aim to identiy AI generated texts. These tools identify sentences which are AI generated. However, there are none tools on the market that 100% guarantees the ability to identify AI generated texts. From personal experience, we have found that plenty of such tools gives false positives especially when meticulous English is used with proper sentence formation.

Giving false positives could have been a major reason for Universities opting out of AI detection tools for checking student’s submission, especially like that of Turnitin in 2023, a software that claims to identify AI-based plagiarism with nearly 98% accuracy.
