In what could be understood as a major thumbs up support to AI for film making process, legendary filmmaker James Cameron has joined the board of directors of Stability AI. Cameron is widely famous for movies like Terminator, Titanic and Avatar. The announcement was made by Stability AI themselves on their official page.

James Cameron lives in the future and waits for the rest of us to catch up,” said CEO of Stability AI, Prem Akkaraju.

A few tweets even suggested that James Cameron may have had some backdoor deal with Stability AI that would allow the company to train models using the content from Cameron’s extensive films over the years.

The below tweets indicate that a lot of people are not happy with Cameron showing a major support to Gen AI services as they believe doing so would endanger the livelihoods of real artists.

The decision to join a leading Gen AI company which has majority of userbase from the entertainment and media industry comes as a surprise to people as Cameron on numerous occasions has earlier hinted at his disapproval for Artificial Intelligence.

Just last year only, Cameron was implying that monetary reasons and greed may have influenced the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence rather than the urge to help the humanity. He expresed significant concern and opined that the development of AI could be a “weaponization” equivalent to the “Nuclear arm’s race”.

It was in 2023 that the SAG- AFTRA union went on a strike as they were against the use of Artificial Intelligence by major studios in order to create the replica of the actor’s likeness. One of the key usage of actor’s likeness where AI can be extensively used is the role of the doubles for which another actor is hired with similar facial or body structure.

Last year, a film The Last Screenwriter whose storyline was generated by AI entirely was cancelled for premiere by the The Prince Charles Cinema.
